What is Early Literacy?
Early Literacy: Why It Matters and How You + Wasatch County Library Can Help
Early literacy is the foundation of a child’s ability to read and write, beginning long before formal schooling. It encompasses the skills, knowledge, and attitudes children develop as they interact with language—through listening, speaking, and exploring books and stories. From recognizing letters and sounds to building vocabulary, early literacy shapes a child’s future learning journey.
Why does it matter? Early literacy is a key predictor of success in school and beyond. Children who are exposed to language-rich experiences from an early age develop stronger communication skills, better comprehension, and a lifelong love of learning.
Parents and caregivers play a vital role. By talking, reading, singing, and playing with your child daily, you build their literacy skills and strengthen your bond. Wasatch County Library's Storytimes and Programs are a wonderful complement to your efforts at home. Storytimes are free, engaging programs designed to help introduce children to books, songs, and social interaction in a supportive setting. They also provide parents with new ideas, resources, and a community of support. Together, your involvement at home and participation in your Wasatch County Library programs create a strong foundation for your child’s success and love of learning.
